Description
Roger-Edgar Gillet (1924–2004) Jumping Rope IV 1973 Oil on canvas, signed lower right, countersigned, titled and dated on the stretcher 90 x 58 cm Condition report: Minor losses and lifting “Gillet seems utterly indifferent to any notion of modernism. He paints for pleasure, out of necessity, giving concrete form to a cynical view of the world, creating art that pleases him—art that is human and solid, in a style and technique time-tested. It is probably this indifference to fashion that is most striking about him.” Georges Boudaille Supported from an early age by Michel Tapié and Charles Estienne, Gillet was part of the Second School of Paris, and distinguished himself through a practice ranging from lyrical abstraction to expressionist figuration in the vein of Jean Fautrier, Paul Rebeyrolle and Jean Dubuffet. In the 1950s, he took part in numerous exhibitions at prestigious galleries (Claude Bernard, Rodolphe Stadler, Jeanne Bucher…) before being represented by the Galerie de France, then by the art dealer Jean Pollak and the Guigon Gallery. Today, the Galerie Nathalie Obadia champions his work, and its accessibility to the general public (with numerous museum exhibitions in recent years) continues to grow.
