Description
Henri Cueco (1929–2017) *Meute* Mixed media on paper, signed in the centre, 34.5 x 25 cm Provenance: > Private collection, Île-de-France > FauveParis, auction of 11 November 2017 – lot no. 417 Condition report: Framed Born in 1929 in Uzerche, Henri Cueco studied painting in his hometown under his father, Vicente Cueco, who encouraged him from a very young age to draw ‘at all hours of the day’. He continued his training as a self-taught artist. Close to nature, he drew what surrounded him in Corrèze – landscapes, animals… Moving to Paris in 1947, he met the painters of La Ruche and took part in the Salon de la Jeune Peinture five years later. His work evolved, establishing him as a key figure in narrative figuration – a movement that emerged in the early 1960s, of which he was one of the central figures (alongside Hervé Télémaque, Recalcati, Schlosser, Aillaud, Adami, Erró...). From 1965 onwards, he produced various series such as *Les Jeux d’Adultes*; *Les Hommes Rouges*; *Les Chiens* (of which this work is a part); *Pommes de terres*; *Cailloux*; and *Les Claustras*. Throughout his career, he has sought to depict nature, humankind and everyday objects with a delicacy and a sense of poetry imbued with humour. He shares his life with Marinette Cueco; through their respective styles, they reveal just how intimately linked art and nature are.
