Description
Marinette Cueco (1934–2023) From a few seeds, stems, pollen and grass dust Grasses and seeds mounted on folding card, in a card slipcase, signed, titled, dated and numbered 15/60 H. 125 cm W. 7 cm “Since the 1960s, Marinette Cueco has been developing a unique body of work that she situates within both nature and the ephemeral. Initially devoting herself to tapestry and weaving, she gradually began weaving grasses, which by the late 1970s had become her sole artistic pursuit. In 1986, her work was exhibited at the Musée d’Art Moderne de la Ville de Paris. Using raw materials found in the countryside, mainly in Corrèze – where she is from and where she spends part of her time – Marinette Cueco creates works and installations either in situ or in the tranquillity of her studio. A collector of plant matter of all kinds (seeds, petals, leaves, stems, pebbles, rare earths and peelings…) and a geologist, she arranges her chosen elements into meticulous and fascinating compositions, ranging from very large to very small formats. Her works are microcosms in which the eye can lose itself, and the soul can be rejuvenated." Text accompanying the exhibition “Marinette Cueco – Fantastic Herbariums” at the Domaine de Chaumont-sur-Loire in 2020.
