Copy of a Valdivia votive stele, c. 2300–2000 BC, carved stone H.: 33 cm Bibliography: Alvaro Guillot-Muñoz (1897–1971), THE ENGRAVED STONES OF PRE-VALDIVIA, REFERENCE VAL 7, page 10 The ancient stone stelae of Ecuador are amongst the oldest known stone sculptures in the New World. They were probably idols used in ritual practices. They may date back as far as the 4th millennium BC and, although each stele is unique, they share certain common features, such as, in particular, the yex depicted in relief and of square shape, as well as the top of the skull, which may refer to that of an owl – a creature believed at the time to be a mystical nocturnal being capable of flying to other worlds and thus closely associated with the shaman.
