Commentary:
Apart from a few details, this work is very similar to the painting by Veyrassat for the 1884 Salon entitled "Passe-cheval pour chevaux de rivière".
These similarities between Veyrassat's works did not escape the notice of the critic and journalist Louis Enault, who wrote of the 1884 painting:
"We believe that M.Veyrassat could take as his life's watchword this ancient motto of our fathers: "Continuing makes you win!" I know few artists who have more perseverance than this one in following the line he has drawn for himself. I hasten to add that it is a straight line. I once heard a painter say to some young people who were listening to him: "Do you want to strike a blow with the public, whose favour you must first win? Do only one painting; but do it all your life!" This is the theory of specialities. It has its merits, and Mr Veyrassat has no reason to regret having put it into practice. No one has studied and knows better than he the river horse - that first cousin of the hippopotamus - which tows the heavy barges along the rivers, and he places it happily in pictures always well composed, both picturesque and accurate, with an accent so personal that one could recognize them if he took the trouble to sign them". (Louis Enault, Paris-Salon 1884, Paris E.Bernard & Cie imprimeurs-éditeurs, 1884).
