Description
Romantic school of the second half of the 19th century Waterfall in the forest Oil on canvas Unsigned, numbered ‘582’ in the lower left-hand corner On the reverse, several old labels with partially faded handwritten inscriptions, including ‘Edward Gai 1860’ 41 x 30.8 cm. (canvas previously re-stretched) The old handwritten inscription on the stretcher seems to refer to the American painter Edward Gay (1837–1928), a landscape painter associated with the Hudson River School. In the early 1860s, Edward Gay travelled to Germany, where he studied under the Romantic painters Johann Wilhelm Schirmer and Karl Friedrich Lessing, whose compositions bear similarities to this work.
