Description
Alphonse Gabriel VALLOT (active 1846–1855) A painter at his easel in the Forest of Fontainebleau Oil on canvas Signed lower left 51 x 65 cm With frame: 80 x 93 cm Oil on canvas, signed lower left, 20 x 25.5 in, with frame: 31.4 x 36.6 in Alphonse Vallot developed a keen interest in the visual arts from a very early age. However, his colour blindness prevented him from devoting himself fully to painting. He therefore worked as a decorative painter, producing mainly pen-and-ink drawings. Alongside his professional work, he devoted his spare time to studying local prehistory. Fascinated by the Forest of Fontainebleau, which he explored, sketched and admired, he also carried out archaeological explorations and excavations there. In the course of his research, he collected numerous artefacts dating from prehistoric times and the Gallo-Roman period, a large proportion of which he eventually bequeathed to the municipality of Fontainebleau.
