Rosa BONHEUR (1822–1899) Study of a Brown Horse Oil on canvas Signature stamp in the lower left-hand corner (lugt.264) Bears on the reverse a red wax stamp reading ‘Vente Rosa Bonheur 1900’ (the original stretcher has been replaced; the stamp has been screwed onto the new stretcher) 65 x 81 cm With frame: 93 x 100 cm Provenance: - Rosa Bonheur’s studio, Georges Petit auction, 30 May–2 June 1900, Paris; the work corresponds to lot no. 82 - Collection of Gordon Cameron Edwards (1866–1946), timber merchant and Member of Parliament, subsequently passed down through the family. - Heffel Fine Art Auction, Canada, 4 April 2024 to 25 April 2024, lot no. 404 We would like to thank Ms Katherine Brault, President of Château Rosa Bonheur, for confirming the authenticity of this work. Note: A painting very similar to the one we are presenting, but larger in size, is held at the Château de Fontainebleau (on loan from the Musée d’Orsay) under the title ‘Cheval gris au vert’.
