A great aristocratic travel painter originally from Guadeloupe, Évremond de Bérard explored the world across continents; from the Amazonian forests of Brazil in South America to the northern Himalayas in Asia, via the African coast, and as far as the banks of the Ganges in India; the artist who painted this work was a true adventurer.
A member of the Geographical Society and the Imperial Zoological Society, it was in his capacity as a correspondent that Bérard sensitively documented the everyday life of non-European cultures. In 1877, the Ministry of Public Instruction, Religious Affairs and Fine Arts commissioned Bérard on an expedition to the Himalayas and northern India to document the region’s ‘botany and anthropology’.
During this two-year journey, Bérard produced numerous sketches, from which he created many paintings on his return to France, most of which were commissioned by the French state. Weakened by the gruelling conditions of the journey, Bérard died in 1881 from malaria contracted during his final trip to India.
