Charles Camille CHAZAL (1825–1875) The Dream of Claudia Procula, Wife of Pontius Pilate Oil on canvas 120 x 148 cm (restored and with missing sections) Provenance: - Acquired by a descendant of the artist. - Osenat auction, 22 November 2015, lot 231 - Private collection - Osenat auction, 12 February 2012, lot 109 - Collection of the Château de la Brosse, formerly owned by the Chazal family. According to Christian tradition, Claudia Procula was the wife of Pontius Pilate, the Roman governor who judged Jesus. Her name appears mainly in the Gospel of Matthew (27:19), where she sends a message to her husband warning him not to condemn Jesus, claiming to have had a troubling dream about him. She is not featured in the other Gospels, but later traditions, particularly within the Orthodox Church and certain medieval legends, attribute great piety to her. Some accounts even regard her as a protective figure or a future saint, highlighting her fidelity to the truth despite her husband’s power. Oil on canvas, 47.2 x 58.2 in
