Originally from the Drôme region, Philippe Lattard spent his adolescence in New York in the 1870s, during which time he began his training in drawing. He returned to France in the early 1880s to join Jean-Léon Gérôme’s studio. A regular exhibitor at the Salon in the 1890s, Lattard went on to make a career as a portraitist of the Belle Époque bourgeoisie. He returned to New York in the early 1900s, where he died in 1907.
