Description
Henri de TOULOUSE LAUTREC (1864–1901), after
Portrait of Péan, surgeon. (Jules-Emile Péan, 1830–1898)
Plate for a print based on a sketch by Toulouse-Lautrec, steel plate mounted on copper, and one print.
Subject similar to that found in the journal *La Chronique Médicale*, 1902, p. 98
Professor Péan is depicted in profile, in the midst of a lecture, before skilfully wielding the scalpel. Toulouse-Lautrec, fascinated by medical expertise, had frequented the wards of several hospitals as a keen observer, thanks to his friends Doctors Delaunay and Roque de Fursac, as well as his cousin Dr Tapié de Céleyran, he was able to spend a great deal of time in close contact with Professor Péan, an eminent surgeon at Saint Anne’s Hospital and later at Saint Louis Hospital in Paris until 1893. He was in the habit of operating in public, using instruments and techniques that paved the way for modern surgery (including the haemostatic forceps)
10.9 x 10 cm.
