Description
Charles-Alexandre de CALONNE (1734–1802) Comptroller-General of Finances, active agent and treasurer of the Émigration. Letter from the author, Frederik, 2 May 1801; 4 pages in-4 (slight tears at the fold). Concerning the estate of M. de La Borde [the farmer-general and patron Jean-Benjamin de La Borde (1734–1794), guillotined in 1794]. Calonne is determined to ‘report to His Majesty’s Treasury the funds from Mr de La Borde’s estate which are held in London, and to make it known that these funds, by the laws of the Kingdom, have devolved to His Majesty’s domain on two grounds: 1. because the person to whom they belonged died in France during the war; 2. because those of his children who have put themselves forward as his heirs all reside in enemy territory”,. The King shall thus settle, from the funds deposited with the Chancellery, ‘the claims admissible in England’, and in particular the sums owed to Calonne himself; the remainder shall be sent to France to the heirs, ‘at the time of peace, to be added to the estate’s assets’.
