Herbert Someton FOXWELL (1849–1936), English economist. Corrected proofs, *The Monetary Situation*, 1895; 14 folios, large folio size (approx. 63 x 25 cm).
Manuscript sheets from his lecture on the monetary situation, delivered on 27 March 1895 at the National Liberal Club, annotated on the reverse: ‘Proof for Reprint Natl Lib. Club paper’. There are a few corrections and two handwritten additions of 9 and 3 lines respectively: ‘within a certain range all ratios are practicable; but statistical estimates are so conflicting that there is room for difference of opinion both as to the limits of the practicable range, & as to the particular ratio within these limits which is most likely to secure the great desideration, stability in the value of money. ’ – ‘But as Herr von Kardoff has suggested, the principle of a gradual transition might be applied to a free coinage system, and the expedient of charging a varying seigniorage.’
