Description
Francis HORNER (1778–1817). Letter from the author, Woburn Abbey, Wednesday [1815], to Sir Samuel Romilly; one and a half pages, in-8; in English. Concerning the trial of Elizabeth Fenning [a servant convicted of attempting to poison her employers; she was sentenced and executed on 26 July 1815; her highly controversial trial caused a great stir.] He concurs with Romilly’s view and, in the absence of witnesses, would like the trial to be adjourned and further investigations carried out: “How could the Chancellor allow her to be executed if there were no other witnesses? If this is an accurate account of the trial, the case seems to cry out for some investigation or further proceedings’… Enclosed is a note addressed to the lawyer James Reddie in Edinburgh.
