Description
Joseph LAKANAL (1762–1845). Letter from the author, Villarceaux via Magny (Seine-et-Oise), 13 December 1811, to Mr Bordier, a property owner in Paris; 2 pages in-4, address bearing postmarks and a red wax seal bearing his monogram. The Banque de France must be convinced of Lakanal’s commitment to honouring his obligations, since, having been unable to locate a banknote due to fall due whilst he was away from Paris, he has taken steps to settle it without delay; ‘if you are still in possession of the last banknote for 300 francs [...], I shall have it paid to you, even before the due date’... He asks Bordier to ‘take care to seal the letters you do me the honour of writing to me; this country is teeming with prying eyes’. Enclosed is a letter signed as acting head of the Lycée Bonaparte, also signed by the headmaster Binet and the censor Targé, 24 Vendémiaire XIV (16 October 1804; 1 folio page on Lycée Bonaparte letterhead, addressed), to the Director-General of Public Education, Antoine-François Fourcroy.
