Alfred MARSHALL (1842–1924). 3 letters, Cambridge, 24 May–17 June 1908, to Émile Levasseur; 7 pages, in-8 format, addressed to him; 2 in French, the third in English. An interesting exchange of letters concerning his candidacy for the Académie des sciences morales et politiques. He is honoured that ‘the Section of Political Economy, Statistics and Finance’ is nominating him ‘to the Academy of Moral and Political Sciences, to replace Lord Goschen as a corresponding member’, which he accepts with gratitude (24 May). He received “from the Permanent Secretary of the Institut de France formal notification of my election as a corresponding member”; he will prove himself worthy of this honour (15 June). In a long, four-page letter in English (17 June), he explained the difficulties he was facing with his book *National Industry and Trade*: he had sent the first part to the printers in 1904, but his work had then slowed down and he realised he would not be able to complete it for several years; he had just given up his chair at Cambridge to go and work in South Tyrol: ‘I hope to write in the high mountains (1,500–1,600 metres) during the summer’. This is why it is impossible for him to turn his thoughts in another direction and attend the forthcoming congress of the Institute of Statistics in Paris.
