Description
Victor de Riquetti, Marquis de Mirabeau (1715–1789). 2 letters, Paris 1776–1783, to Mr Ribard at the Château de Chamoust; 1 page in-4 each, one with address and red wax seal bearing the coat of arms (a few slight defects). 6 January 1776: ‘I shall not ask you for a monument, but I may perhaps have the confidence to ask you for a simple design for a chapel where I would like to have a vault built and place the relics of my late mother, at whose feet I would one day like to rest. I say ‘simple’ because she recommended, through her actions during her lifetime and in her will, that little expense be incurred on her behalf”... 6 January 1783, expressing his thanks for compliments regarding his Grand Cross of the Order of Vasa: ‘It is my mark of distinction as syndic of the plough, and if indeed I have done any good during my time here, it is to have roused the dishevelled masses in this regard, to teach them something whose novelty certainly does not account for its value, namely that everything they seek so far afield lies at their feet’...
