He thanks him belatedly, the delay being due ‘to the weakness of my eyes and that of my mind. Even a letter of a few lines is a labour for me. I am reduced to telling you only very briefly what I would very much like to explain at length, for your work is full of beauty and the mention you make of me assures me that ‘non omnis moriar’”… [This refers to the book *Le Bonheur que procure l’étude* (*The Joy of Learning*), by Chancellor de L’Hôpital (Michaud, 1817); Morellet is described therein as ‘a generous old man’.]
