Description
Frédéric PASSY (1822–1912), Member of Parliament, economist and pacifist; the first recipient of the Nobel Peace Prize (1901, jointly with Henri Dunant). 35 letters, Paris, Neuilly and Le Désert de Retz, 1866–1876, to Joseph Garnier; 72 pages in-8 and in-12 formats, 3 addresses.
To the editor and later director of the *Journal des Économistes*, to whom he submitted various articles and reviews: on Paul Leroy-Beaulieu’s book *Les Guerres contemporaines* (19 August 1869), Louis d’Armailhac’s *L’Ouvrier économiste* (August 1871), a pamphlet from the Guillaumin bookshop on *La liberté de l’imprimerie*, and another on *The Choice of a Tax*, which concludes in favour of an income tax (26 October 1876). He reports on his activities in Paris and the provinces, sends the texts of his lectures and talks (notably on Bastiat), requests and returns proofs, highlights news items worthy of mention in the newspaper, and discusses his participation in conferences, etc.
Enclosed are 2 autograph letters and 6 handwritten letters (1900–1908) to Mlle Guillaumin: appointments, replies to requests, an invitation to his 84th birthday, congratulations on her translation of Miss Edgeworth’s letters, and thanks for Ciezkowski’s book on the Peerage; plus one autograph letter and one signed letter to Mr Besson at the *Revue bleue*.
