Description
David RICARDO (1772–1823). Letter, Gatcomb Park, Minchinhampton, 22 August 1823, to John Wright in London; 1 page in-4, address on the reverse with a red wax seal; in English. To the editor of the Parliamentary Debates, who had requested a transcript of Ricardo’s speech (10 July 1823) on Charles Western’s motion. His speech contains a large number of remarks on Western’s pamphlet (Second Address to the Landowners of the United Empire, 1822), which, in his view, was not only highly open to criticism on its own merits but also at odds with Western’s frequently stated views (‘which, besides being, in my opinion, very attackable in its own merits, was at variance with the frequently declared opinions of that gentleman’). As he does not have the pamphlet to hand, he cannot refer to it, but he believes it is not desirable for all these remarks to be published. He will look at the reviews in the newspapers and return the corrected review, or try to rewrite his speech (‘the speech written out as far as I can recollect it’).
