Jean-Baptiste SAY (1767–1832). 3 letters, Paris 1797–1799, to various recipients; 4½ pages, in-8 or in-4, 2 addresses. As editor of the *Décade philosophique*. 26 Fructidor, to the Citizens in charge of the *Envoi des Lois*: he asks them to send him ‘a copy of the documents published by the Directory in connection with the latest foiled conspiracy. ‘My intention is to print them in the *Décade philosophique* in the edition due to come off your presses’; he counts on their patriotism to ‘spread the truths that must enlighten all the French people regarding the manoeuvres of Royalism’. – 18 Floréal, 7 May 1797, to Paul Ustery, a doctor in Zurich, regarding payment for the last quarter’s issue of the *Décade Philosophique*, which had not been made by Mr Luc Preiswerk of Basel. He is hesitant to send him copies of Gibbon’s *Memoirs* on consignment, as he does not know how to recover the unsold copies, and points out that he benefits from a 25 per cent discount from him. – 1st Prairial Year VII (20 May 1799): the verses (a translation of Homer) from his correspondent, which he intends to publish in the next issue of the *Décade Philosophique*, have been misplaced ‘either in my printing works or in my office’; he asks that ‘another copy be made, and I apologise for my own carelessness or that of my staff, for which I must take the blame’…
