Jean-Baptiste SAY (1767–1832). 2 letters from the author, Paris 1814 and undated, to Pierre-Louis Ginguené; two and a half pages in-4 and two pages in-8, with addresses; the first bearing the postmark ‘Bureau de Postes Chambre des Pairs’. 14 August 1814. He had received his ‘new collection of poetry’ and we had first devoured what was new to us: the fables, James’s 15th birthday, & I need not tell you that we greatly appreciated the grace, nobility, sentiment and philosophy that pervade all the pieces, just as in those we already knew by the same poet. We are going to read *Adonis*, and reread the others, which we are by no means sorry to revisit and in which you may have made some welcome changes from which we shall benefit. This new volume will certainly further enhance the esteem in which the author’s personal character and talent are held’... He also mentions the second volume of the new, revised edition of his *Treatise on Political Economy*: ‘I attach great importance to these valuable corrections because I flatter myself that this is a book that will stand the test of time. A quarter of the print run has already gone, even before the newspapers have published any extracts’... Friday 15th. He invites him to come on Saturday “to have soup with us. On that day we shall be hosting an American, Mr Todd, the son-in-law of the President of the United States’. He thanks Ginguené ‘for the corrections you sent me. All of them, without exception, were made in the book itself, and are errors that you have rectified. These corrections are all the more valuable as the author, whose attention is absorbed by the substance of the subject, is not in the right frame of mind to spot them, and everyone has their own regional quirks’.
