Description
Jean-Baptiste SAY (1767–1832). Autograph letter, Paris, Thursday 11 [1819?], to Mr Voizelle at the Athénée; 2 pages, in-8 format, address bearing a red wax seal (broken). He asks for ‘two tickets for Benjamin Constant’s lecture on Saturday. I should be most obliged’. In a long postscript, he complains: ‘at my last lecture I found it difficult to finish my speech because of the stifling atmosphere’; it would be necessary “to have two or three windows opened between 4 and 7 o’clock. The time before last […] I had them opened, and I felt much better for it, as did the audience”… Enclosed is a receipt (PA.S.), Paris, 19 March 1819, for 500 francs received from the administrators of the Athénée, representing his fees for the year’s lectures.
