Description
Jean-Charles-Léonard Simonde de SISMONDI (1773–1842). Autograph letter, Chênes near Geneva, 3 August 1841, to Messrs Furne & Co., booksellers in Paris; 3 pages, in-8, addressed. He has indeed received three copies of his *History of the Italian Republics*, a new edition in ten volumes, but, whilst attempting to have one copy bound, he realises that there are missing leaves in Volume VI of all three copies: ‘I would be grateful if you could send them to me immediately. This delay grieves me greatly; the copy I was having bound was intended for a relative who is very dear to me.’ He regrets not having been consulted during the preparation of this edition: ‘It seems to me that I could have suggested subjects for the engravings with which it is adorned that were less unrelated to the work. Had I been consulted, I would also have insisted that you retain the chapter numbering that I had approved. By starting afresh as you have done in each volume, you make it impossible for those wishing to consult the original on the basis of a reference they find in some other author—using the numbering of the original edition—to find their way back to it’”… He hopes that the copy sent to London is complete…
