Anne-Robert-Jacques TURGOT (1727–1781). L.S., Limoges, 9 February 1770, to his former secretary Antoine-Bernard Caillard ‘at the residence of Mr Turgot, Intendant of Limoges’ in Paris; 1 page, quarto, address, fragment of a red wax seal. He will be unable to send him what he had promised [letter to Voltaire]. ‘Arrangements for the poor are keeping me entirely occupied’. He has received no reply from the Count de Boisgelin regarding the advance on gratuities for Caillard; he has “a relative whom he wishes to entrust with business matters during his absences, in order to introduce him to the career of diplomacy”. That is why Caillard will not be appointed as an embassy secretary recognised by the Court, “but I do not believe this should cause you any distress, as he is not a man who is following the same path as you”. He learnt from Abbé Morellet of ‘the deplorable state of your brother and the situation in which his unfortunate wife will find herself. I deeply sympathise with the grief this causes you’… Enclosed is a letter to Caillard, Limoges, 22 September [1769?]: there is no need to have his cabriolet sent to him; he is about to leave for Angoulême; he has found Abbé Delille’s *Géorgiques* at Barbou’s bookshop, but he still needs the map of La Rochelle… (1 p. in-4, address).
