Anne-Robert-Jacques TURGOT (1727–1781). Letter from the author, Paris, 11 December 1771, to M. de Boynes [Minister of the Navy]; 3 pages, in-4. He was unable to introduce Abbé Morellet to him in person, having left him at his home and instructed him to convey his apologies. He also had to speak to him on behalf of M. de Saint-Victor: ‘He received with gratitude the hope you had given him that you would come to his aid by taking his muskets for the armament of the troops intended to guard the colonies; but this hope does not relieve him of the difficulties into which he has been plunged by the failure to receive the funds owed to him in Saint-Domingue and the advance payment for the manufacture of the 2,200 muskets he had commissioned since the departure of the first batch’... Failing the deal, a letter announcing the intention to purchase his muskets at the proposed price would enable him to meet his financial obligations... ‘If this is possible, I shall be most deeply obliged to you.
