Description
Anne-Robert-Jacques TURGOT (1727–1781). Letter, Paris, 22 November 1774, to Mr Mollet, inspector of the salt tax in Provence at Aix; one and a half folio pages. He had received the memorandum in which Mollet complained that his journeys in 1772 had not been paid for by the Receiver-General of the farms in Marseille ‘on the grounds that the King’s statement had not been sent to him’. This is true, and Turgot will issue orders for this to be sent ‘without delay and for you to be paid at the same times as in previous years’. As for the compensation requested, ‘it cannot be granted. The Edict of February 1771, the provisions of which you are invoking, does not authorise it’. This Edict concerns the reimbursement to officials of their advances and interest, and not compensation.
