Anne-Robert-Jacques TURGOT (1727–1781). 4 manuscripts with handwritten annotations or corrections by Turgot and, in some cases, also by Miromesnil, plus 2 letters (L.A.S.) addressed to Turgot by Michel de Fourqueux and by Armand-Thomas Hue de Miromesnil, January 1776; 20 folio pages (plus interleaved folios) in 3 quires bound in blue silk, 5 quarto pages, 1 folio page and 1 quarto page. An interesting and rare dossier relating to the drafting of an edict on mill banalities. Two successive versions of the ‘Royal Edict regulating mill banalities’, with handwritten corrections by Turgot; the second version bears a number of comments noted on interleaved sheets. The preamble states that the abolition of mill banality rights complements the measures promoting the free trade in grain and flour… On 13 January, M. de Fourqueux submitted his observations on this draft edict, along with ‘Notes on the observations ’... In the margins of the observations, Turgot has noted 14 handwritten remarks; one note is in the hand of the Keeper of the Seals, Miromesnil, who has also extensively annotated and commented in his own hand in the margins of the ‘Notes on the observations’. He returned the whole document to Turgot on 29 January, stating that he was ‘not particularly impressed by the responses to his observations’.
