Carlo ALLIONI (1728–1804), a Piedmontese physician and botanist. 3 letters, Turin 1749–1751, to Jean-Étienne Guettard in Paris; 9 pages, quarto size, one addressed envelope bearing a fragment of a red wax seal with a coat of arms; in French. Interesting correspondence on botany. 27 December 1749. At the request of Mr Seguier, he sends him a parcel of seeds, including ‘some seeds from the plants I gathered at Monsenis’, and offers a ‘collection of dried Alpine plants gathered during my travels’, of which he provides a lengthy list… – 27 February 1750. Praise for Guettard’s work (Observations on Plants), which brings together ‘in two volumes the flora of such a vast country’, and offers him further dried herbs and seeds, which he lists. – 27 January 1751. He thanks Guettard for his consignments of dried herbs and seeds… ‘The area around Turin yields petrifications in abundance. One finds several different species of sea shells, either calcined or petrified. I have recently found the ostreum mentioned by Monti […], the pinna marina, sea glands and glossopetræ are plentiful there, as are several species of concha venerea; I shall take great pleasure in sending some to you”… Enclosed is a letter, Turin, 24 Messidor IX (13 July 1801), recommending his pupil, Dr Lavy.
