Pierre-Gilles de GENNES (1932–2007), Nobel Laureate in Physics (1991). Autograph manuscript, ‘Mobile chains + rubber’; 6 pages in-4 in pencil (on the reverse of printed folios). A physics demonstration containing numerous calculations, relating in particular to the chain’s partition coefficient between the external and internal environments; amongst the many mathematical formulae, the following points are noted: ‘Minimum density required for an elongated brush’; ‘it is not enough for the filaments to be in contact for them to stretch’; ‘Interpenetration is always possible within a mesh’; ‘Rubber-to-rubber adhesion via free chains’… Attached is his printed paper, ‘Interdigitation between a brush and rubber’, [1994] (9 pp., in-4 format, and 2 plates).
