Description
MEDICINE. P.S. by 5 doctors, Paris, 10 November 1813; 3 pages, in-4 (label from Dr Eug. Olivier’s collection). Consultation of an epileptic patient, carried out ‘during the patient’s very own seizure’. The doctors note the ‘paralytic weakness’ of the young Jacques Latour Soulan and conclude ‘that the primary focus of the condition lies in the brain’, and that it has worsened ‘since the patient was subjected to electricity’, as advised by Mr de Bienville. They fear “that the frequent recurrence of these epileptic convulsions may soon degenerate into a soporous, apoplectic or paralytic condition”, and recommend a seven-point treatment and dietary regimen: ‘1. By applying five leeches behind each ear. As much blood as possible must be drawn from their bites. […] 7. His diet shall consist of light meats, vegetables and fruit’.
