Description
Philippe PINEL (1745–1826), psychiatrist. Autograph letter, Paris, 11 Nivôse Year XIV (1 January 1806), to a ‘dear colleague’; 1 page, folio (slightly damp). He is aware of ‘the keen interest you take in the progress of that branch of medicine which deals with disorders of the mental faculties and which bears such a close resemblance to the science you practise with such success’. He recommends Mr Esquirol ‘for the post vacated by the death of the doctor at Charenton’… [Jean-Étienne Esquirol (1772–1840) succeeded Pinel at the Salpêtrière in 1810, and succeeded Royer-Collard in 1825 as chief physician at the Maison royale de Charenton, now the Esquirol Hospital.] Enclosed is a letter from his son Scipion Pinel, dated 26 April 1833, to Dr Breschet, announcing that he is to give ‘a course on mental illnesses at the hospice de perfectionnement’ (1 p., in-4); plus a political pamphlet by Pinel’s nephew, addressed ‘To the Citizens of the Department of Tarn’, 1 April 1848.
