Description
Émile BERNARD (1868–1941). Two autograph poems and a manuscript; two pages in-4 and one page in-fol. Sonnet to Michelangelo: ‘God, to invite Man to the spectacle of Heaven’… (1 page in-4 with crossings-out and corrections). – On the reverse, a sonnet to Versailles: ‘O Palace where, amidst gold, frescoes and mirrors’… (1 page in-4, crossed out with two lines, with the note ‘published 49’). Note dated 6 July 1940, hailing the armistice and the German victory: ‘By an extraordinary turn of events, bordering on a miracle, France, which seemed lost, has suddenly been saved. Suddenly cut off from England, it has found its salvation in Germany, which it believed to be its greatest enemy”… Etc. Enclosed is the catalogue of the Émile Bernard exhibition at the Galerie Contemporaine (April 1942).
