Henri VEVER (1854–1942), jeweller and collector. P.A.S. and 4 L.A.S., Paris 1896–1920, mostly to the publisher and art dealer Michel Manzi; 8 pages of various sizes. On Japanese art. 7 February 1896. Acknowledgement of receipt from Manzi for the sale of three paintings by Degas for the sum of 21,000 francs. – 15 January 1901, thanking him for a ‘magnificent publication’ [the first issue of the magazine *Les Modes*], featuring reproductions of his jewellery: ‘never has anything been made so splendid, never will anything be done better. You have reached the pinnacle of perfection’… – 19 January 1909. He saw ‘some of your beautiful Japanese prints’ at the Musée des Arts Décoratifs. One of them, in particular, made my heart skip a beat. It is a large eagle with a powerful presence. I am writing to beg you to part with this fine piece, which I once admired at your home. You will give me immense pleasure’… – Telegram regretting that he could not attend dinner, and asking her to send him ‘the Hiroshige intended for my brother and the Sharakou with two heads’. 18 February 1920, to Mrs Manzi, thanking her for sending a memento of her dear husband: ‘this print, in which the features of one of our friends are so wittily depicted, and with such a mischievous likeness, will remind me both of the artist who engraved it and of the model who, in days gone by, used to liven up our little dinners of collectors and Japanophiles with his sharp-tongued repartee’; it will take pride of place in her study.
