Description

Orazio BENEVOLI (1605–1670). Musical manuscript, *Fremebat furore ductus*, solo voice by Mr Horatio Benevoli; title page and 19 pages in-4 (23.5 × 16.5 cm), modern cardboard binding (small strip of paper glued to the third page). Cantata for voice and figured bass accompaniment. The voice part is notated in the treble clef; the continuo, in figured bass, is in the bass clef. ‘Fremebat furore ductus Maximinus in ostinata nimis Catherine constantia’… This refers to Emperor Maximinus’s anger at the unshakeable steadfastness of Saint Catherine of Alexandria. This composition is not listed in the RISM and appears to be unpublished. The Roman composer Orazio Benevoli devoted himself to sacred music and left behind around ten masses for various voices.
