Description

Giovanni Battista CASALI (1715–1792). Musical manuscript, *L’amor mi consiglia*, 1745; oblong in-4 notebook comprising 7 pages (small cut in the upper margin of the first folio). Aria on 10-line Italian-style paper, inscribed at the top ‘Del Sigre Gio Batta Casali 1745’. An Allegro introduction in 3/4 time over two staves precedes the aria (melody and lyrics) with accompaniment on one staff: ‘L’amor mi consiglia sue larti il martire’…, interspersed with ritornellos over two staves. Casali, a prolific Roman composer, composed around ten operas, a dozen oratorios, some twenty masses, and numerous other sacred works; Grétry was among his pupils. We have been unable to identify this aria, another copy of which is held at the British Library (Add Ms 31623).
