Description
Ferdinand HÉROLD (1791–1833). Signed autograph musical manuscript; oblong quarto notebook, 60 pages on 30 leaves, 19 × 25 cm, with a marbled paper cardboard cover. A very interesting and rare sketchbook, signed on the cover. Hérold jotted down numerous themes and motifs for orchestral works (symphonies, dance tunes, waltzes, marches, overtures, etc.) and for piano (notably rondos, including a ‘Military Rondo’), vocal arias (‘Plus de bonheur pour moi je suis abandonnée’…, ‘comic bass aria’, romances…), marches and dances, a fugue, notes on melodies heard in Italy (‘banda tedesca in Bologna’, the ‘Miserere from the Sistine Chapel in Rome’…), etc., with key signatures and interesting notes on development and instrumentation: ‘trombones with the whole orchestra in unison’, ‘duet accompanied only by cellos and bassoons in unison Salieri’, ‘a chorus accompanied solely by all string instruments in unison’, ‘in a slow aria, the whole orchestra playing legato with the cellos alone providing the accompaniment ’, ‘ritornello of an aria to be skilfully arranged for the wind instruments, one after the other’ Provenance: Hérold family archives, Drouot, 12 June 1991 (lot 63).
