Description
ROMANCES. Illustrated manuscript with musical notation, monogrammed ‘HM’, *Romances*, 1884–1898; an in-4 volume of 166 pages, in a contemporary midnight-blue shagreen binding with a title and embossed borders. A collection of approximately 120 songs, carefully handwritten with ornate, watercolour-illustrated titles, and featuring over 30 drawings and watercolours, some of which are full-page. Some of the music has been notated. At the end, a table lists the songs and drawings. The author of this collection has carefully scraped out his name from the title page, but one drawing is signed ‘Henri Monterer, 1902’. In addition to opera arias (Mignon, Faust, Obéron, Le Domino noir, La Juive, Fra Diavolo, etc.), Christmas carols, poems (Lamartine, Pailleron), sung waltzes, a few monologues, a piece entitled ‘Cursed be war!’, and a curious ‘Mnemonic Fantasy on the operas’…
