Camille SAINT-SAËNS (1835–1921). Autograph letter, Saint-Gervais-les-Bains, 17 August [1867?], to Princess Sayn-Wittgenstein; 3 pages, in-8, bearing her engraved monogram. Concerning Franz Liszt and his ‘Legend of Saint Elizabeth’. ‘Princess, I cannot tell you how delighted I am to see that you are taking an interest in the works of our dear abbé, whose genius and character I so greatly admire, and you may count on my utmost devotion in all matters concerning him. I wrote to him some time ago regarding St Elizabeth, and he replied that he wished to be as little involved as possible in the performance of his works, but that he would be very pleased if [someone] were to take charge of them; at least that was the gist of his letter. I therefore believe that his authorisation is a mere formality, and that he will be very grateful to you if you succeed in organising a performance of *St Elizabeth* worthy of the beauty of the work.
