Description
Georges BATAILLE (1897–1962). Typescript, [Le Petit], September 1942; 12 pages, in-4. Typescript with handwritten annotations by Hans Bellmer. *Le Petit* was published in 1943 (dated 1934) by Georges Hugnet, without a publisher’s name, in a print run of 63 copies, under the pseudonym Louis Trente. This is an unfinished project for a publication by Louis Broder, with illustrations by Hans Bellmer. On the occasion of the 1963 reprint, André Breton wrote to Jean-Jacques Pauvert: ‘*Le Petit*, no doubt because Bataille is no longer with us, offers the most deeply explored and poignant aspect of his thought, and attests to the importance it will assume in the near future.’ This double-carbon typescript was entrusted to Hans Bellmer. It bears the following note at the end: “Remaining fragment of the manuscript written at Pouilleuse [sic for Panilleuse (Eure)] by Le Petit, published clandestinely in 1943 under the pseudonym Louis Trente and with the false date of 29 June 1934 (53 copies printed). With the exception of the first, the paragraphs not marked in the margin or in coloured pencil are unpublished.” Some paragraphs are numbered from a to d; some are marked in the margin with a line drawn in pencil. The typescript contains a few blank spaces, corresponding to undeciphered words Hans Bellmer made a few annotations in red pencil on the first page
