He had read several times the book sent by Godefroy to the Ambassador ‘on the subject of the English Parliament […] I found in it beauties so carefully sought out and so little known’, even after his two-year stay in London… In the bookshops of The Hague, he ‘found only books banned in France. These comprise a great many memoirs relating to history, a few critiques of past and present reigns, and St Amour’s Journal, detailing what took place in Rome concerning the Five Propositions. Blau [Joan Blaeu] is finishing the printing of his *Theatrum Civitatum*, which is a collection of all the cities, with their plates and a brief summary of their history; it is a kind of atlas that will comprise many volumes’…
