Alphonse de LAMARTINE. 2 L.A. (incomplete at the end), Mâcon 1831–1832, [to the Marquise de Montcalm]; 2 pages, each in-4 (a small marginal tear on the first). 21 August 1831. He forgives the Marquise’s ‘harsh words’ regarding his political views, and reaffirms his friendship and loyalty. He praises the stance taken by Lainé, who has resigned from the House of Peers: ‘in my eyes, he is the Plato of politics’. For his part, he does not wish to stand for election to the Chamber: ‘I do not have the strength to contend with such passions and indignities. I lack the gift of the gab. If I had it, I would be master of the country’… 13 January 1832. Ill since Christmas and worried about his father’s health, he had been unable to write to the Marquise sooner: ‘But I love you and will always love you, here as in Paris, in Jerusalem as in Constantinople.
