Félicité de LAMENNAIS (1782–1854). Autograph letter, Monday 4 June [1838], to Mlle Cornullier de Lucinière; 3 pages, in-8, addressed. He has received her letter, full of sadness, and mentions ‘our dear Villiers’, who is not expected to live much longer. He is ageing considerably, no longer goes out much from home, and rarely ventures far: ‘I have completely stopped seeing several people who live closer to my neighbourhood than you do. Travelling is too much for me […] My health can cope with more strenuous exercise, but my work suffers as a result, and it is my work that sustains me’. Old friendships grow stronger with the passing years: ‘We draw closer together as the ranks thin out’… He ends on a positive note by announcing the birth of a child in Rennes to Augustine’s young family.
