Joseph de MAISTRE. Autograph letter, Turin, 29 December 1818, [to the Count of Seyssel]; 1 folio page. Following the death of his brother André-Marie de Maistre, Bishop of Aosta [18 July 1818], he regrets that he is unable to send, at the Count’s request, his marble portrait; he offers him a ‘masterpiece of design and likeness: my excellent brother speaks in this work, which I cannot contemplate without emotion […] May this living image remain with you, Count, may it be a token of the affection we have sworn to you, which is as much the choice of our hearts as it is my brother’s legacy”… Formerly in the collection of Maurizio Seyssel d’Aix.
