Description
Henry de MONTHERLANT. Partially autograph typescript, *Don Juan*, 1956–1957; [3]–117 pages (pp. 1–107 with bis folios), in-4, loose sheets in a cardboard slipcase with a sliding cover. Working typescript of the play *Don Juan*, now titled *La Mort qui fait le trottoir*, in a version differing from the published text, and containing significant handwritten additions and corrections. Don Juan premiered at the Théâtre de l’Athénée on 4 November 1958, directed by Georges Vitaly, with Pierre Brasseur in the role of Don Juan; it was published by Lefebvre in April 1958 with lithographs by Mariano Andreu (set designer) and subsequently by Gallimard; it was reprinted in 1972 in the Folio collection and in the Théâtre series (Bibliothèque de la Pléiade) under the title *La Mort qui fait le trottoir* (*Don Juan*). This typescript is dated ‘Paris, May 1956’ at the end, with a handwritten addition: ‘and September 1957’. The text contains numerous variations from the published version, with many crossings-out and corrections as well as significant handwritten additions, in red, green or blue pen, ranging from a single sentence or a few sentences to entire scenes, written between the lines or in the margins, on four loose sheets, and 12 added pages. Certain lines or phrases have been deleted; for example, the end of scene 3 of Act II is crossed out in red pencil (pp. 40–41). The scene with the Commander (Act II, Scene 4) is largely in the author’s own hand, on 7 inserted sheets written in red pen.
