Alfred NETTEMENT (1805–1869). 20 letters, 1841–1868, most of them to the historian Aristide Guilbert (one to Charles Asselineau); 402 pages in-8 and in-4. Mainly concerning Nettement’s collaboration on Guilbert’s *Histoire des villes de France*. ‘The last time I had the pleasure of meeting you, you told me that you would write to me officially to inform me of the amount allocated for Autun, which would give me the opportunity to ask you to convey to your publishers, the comments I felt I ought to make to you personally. […] You mentioned to me, the last time I saw you, a figure of 120 francs per sheet; when you came to ask for my collaboration several years ago, you had offered me 150 francs for each sheet […]. It was therefore only upon receiving the first instalments that I was able to ascertain the size of the sheets. I then saw that the work was published in quarto format, comprising eight pages per sheet, and that the sheets were also numbered. I naturally concluded that the price of 150 francs was allocated to each sheet of eight pages […]. This fee of 150 francs did not seem substantial given the lengthy and difficult work required by the arduous task I had undertaken, for it involved writing the history of a town on which no reasonable work exists […]. Had I been able to believe otherwise, despite my keen desire to please you, I could not have agreed to devote a month and a half of diligent work to exceptional research on a specific aspect of local history, research unrelated to my other duties, which interrupted them and caused me real harm, whilst leading nowhere, since my contribution was confined to the history of a single town’ (26 August 1846)...
