Henri François d’AGUESSEAU (1668–1751), Chancellor of France. Letter from the author, Versailles, 23 March 1735; 3 pages, in-4. Regarding Monsieur Laugier, whose letter he only received yesterday evening: ‘He is returning to the foolish idea of having his arrest warrant served. I ask you to send for him as soon as you have received this note, and to tell him to come and speak to me in Paris, where I intend to go this evening or tomorrow morning […] You will forbid him once again on my behalf […] from taking any further legal action or serving any notice pursuant to the first judgement; otherwise he would utterly ruin himself and force me to abandon him without recourse’. He had initially thought of calling upon the lawyer Romieu, but he believes ‘that it would be far better if you were to take the trouble to speak to Laugier. You will do so, as you have the authority to do so, and in every respect far better than anyone else could.
