BAVARIA. MAXIMILIAN JOSEPH (1756–1825), first King of Bavaria (1806–1825). Autograph letter signed ‘Max. Joseph’, Munich, 20 May 1809, to General Beaumont; one and a half pages, quarto (tears at the folds). A fine letter concerning the German campaign. He had received news via a courier, as well as a letter from General de Wreden: ‘He informs me that he has entered into negotiations with the rebels, that he has granted them a 36-hour armistice, which ended yesterday at 6 o’clock in the morning; he must be in Innsbruck at this very moment, where he will await the outcome of the negotiations. The famous Major Dumèze has undertaken to persuade the insurgents to lay down their arms on condition that, once this is done, I grant him a pension. I have agreed to this in order to put an end to this bloodbath. General Chatelon, whilst passing through Hall after the defeat on the 14th, was so badly mistreated by the peasants that he is currently bedridden in a village called Stemach, unable to move’… He adds in a postscript: ‘Prince Eugène [de Beauharnais, son-in-law of Maximilian Joseph] defeated the Austrian rearguard on the 11th; 1,500 prisoners, 22 officers and the flag of the Reiski Regiment were the spoils of victory. The engagement took place at St Daniel, some 16 leagues from the Carinthian border.”
