Description
Henri BERTRAND (1773–1844), general, a loyal companion of Napoleon on Elba and St Helena. L.A.S. ‘B’, Ch[âteaurou]x, 8 July [1829], to his daughter Hortense, Mrs Amédée Thayer, in Vichy; 3 pages, in-8, addressed. He recounts in detail and with emotion the operation performed on his mother by Dr Falchiero. ‘My dear mother, who is well aware of her condition, hides it above all from her children; she jokes and bears it with courage, calm and cheerfulness—an excellent mother, a rare woman, kind and so perfect to everyone’… Also included is a handwritten letter to his aunt Laclavière, dated 4 August 1828, containing family news (1 p., in-8, addressed). Plus a handwritten letter from Fanny Bertrand to her husband regarding household expenses (2 p., in-8).
